GIS (Geographic Information System)
A GIS (Geographic Information System) “enables the visualisation of the geographic aspects of a body of data, stored in one or more searchable databases…[It] is a combination of computer hardware and software linking geographic data with descriptive information.” 1. This data is used in various applications, including environmental monitoring and modelling, transportation, land surveying, mining and heritage applications, such as museums digitally exhibiting sensitive archaeological sites.
At present there is little dealing specifically or comprehensively with the preservation of this particular type of data, although some aspects of database preservation are applicable to GIS. Some long term preservation issues include a lack of open source formats and metadata standards, large data volume and complex data objects.
